The Knowing Body Working with Embodiment in Coaching & Constellations

Workshop Dates: 7th–8th September 2020
Chester, UK

Most of us in organisations use our bodies to transport our brains from A to B but pay scant attention to what our hearts and guts are telling us – until it is too late! Accessing embodied awareness improves our effectiveness as coaches, yet most forms of coaching ignore what the client is ‘bodying forth’ and how crucial an awareness of embodiment can be to a ‘successful’ client encounter. In this two-day workshop, we will be exploring how to ‘get out of our heads and come to our senses’ – learning how to access and befriend our own embodied intelligence and that of our clients, in simple, practical ways that support transformation in the coaching encounter. In Constellations work we often talk about 'The Knowing Field' but we could just as easily talk about 'The Knowing Body'.

Structure & Ethos

This is absolutely not a workshop on reading ‘body language’! It is a sensitive and compassionate exploration of how we and our clients ‘body forth’ our needs. Becoming more somatically aware and engaged can be crucial to deepening the client relationship and supporting developmental shifts in individuals and teams. Engaging the body moves us from the conceptual realm of ideas to more directly-felt ‘here-and-now’ experience – which is the only place change can happen!

The workshop will be highly practical and participative, and include a lively mix of inputs, exercises in pairs, triads and small groups, discussions and co-enquiry. Offering perspectives drawn from Gestalt, Systemic Constellations, Somatic Coaching and the Leadership Embodiment work of Wendy Palmer, the event will offer:

  • Practise in phenomenological observation – seeing ‘what is’ without preference, fear or intention
  • Practices of ‘attunement’ to self and to others
  • Insight on using ‘Self as Instrument’ and the use of the body as a ‘resonance detector’
  • ‘The Creative Experiment’ in coaching
  • Mindfulness in the coaching encounter
  • Exploration of ‘symptoms’ (eg coughing, snoozing, irritability…) and what they suggest
  • Guidance on the use of touch
  • Possibilities for coachng through movement
  • Awareness of the experience of shame and how to tackle it

Please note that we make sensitive use of film as a support to your learning process, in meus workshops.

Who should attend?

This workshop is suitable for experienced coaches, consultants, therapists and people from other ‘helping professions’ as well as managers who want to develop their ability to access and use their own embodied responses ‘in the moment’; attune to and work skilfully with the embodied responses of their clients; and hone their skills in working phenomenologically. The workshop is also suitable for people learning to facilitate Constellations.
